The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is the governing body of a shooting sport that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounters. It was founded in 1996 as a response to the desires of shooters worldwide. The organization now boasts membership of more than 13,500, including members in 36 foreign countries.
One of the unique facets of this sport is that it is geared toward the new or average shooter, yet is fun, challenging and rewarding for the experienced shooter. The founders developed the sport so that practical gear and practical guns may be used competitively. An interested person can spend a minimal amount on equipment and still be competitive.
The main goal is to test the skill and ability of the individual, not equipment or gamesmanship. “Competition only” equipment is not permitted in this sport.
The firearms are grouped into five (5) divisions: 1) Custom Defensive Pistol (.45ACP semi-automatics only); 2) Enhanced Service Pistol (9mm (9x19) or larger caliber semi-automatics); 3) Stock Service Pistol (9mm (9x19) or larger caliber double action, double action only, or safe action semi-automatics); 4) Enhanced Service Revolver (.38 caliber or larger double action revolvers); and 5) Stock Service Revolver (.38 caliber or larger double action revolvers). See Appendix One – Equipment for delineations in the revolver divisions. Shooters are then classed by like-skill levels with progression from Novice (NV); to Marksman (MM); to Sharpshooter (SS); to Expert (EX); and, finally, to Master (MA).

NEW for 2011
We are very pleased to announce IDPA Defensive Multi Gun/ 3 gun. IDPA was created around the defensive use of a handgun. However, we realize there are a lot of rifles and shotguns placed in closets, trunks, bedsides, etc. as defensive tools as well. In an effort to include the use of these tools, IDPA Defensive Multi Gun (DMG) was created. DMG was not created to replace existing IDPA matches. It is simply another format that clubs can use in addition to their regular IDPA matches. IDPA DMG is a stand alone match format that could be run after regular club matches or on different weekends for an extra challenge and fun. It is designed to be adaptable to the club’s capabilities and you can incorporate any combination of pistols, shotguns and rifles.
There are 4 divisions for DMG. There is an iron sight and optic sight division for major caliber rifles and there are iron sight and optic sight divisions for pistol caliber carbines only. We feel that the pistol caliber divisions will bring out a whole new level of challenge and fun to an already exciting format.

We have a lot of fun shooting real life defensive scenarios. The
defensive use of a handgun in realistic life-threatening scenarios is very challenging and fun. We use all kinds of props, moving targets, and static targets. We practice shooting from concealment, proper use of cover, shooting on the move, identifying and avoiding non-threat targets, proper use of tactical sequence and tactical priority engagement, tactical reloads and a host of other related exercises. It's a lot of fun!

Dubuque Ikes IDPA is an official IDPA affiliated club and we will be hosting 2 classifiers per year for those of you who wish to be ranked nationally and to see where you stand against the rest of the shooters in the world!

Here at the Dubuque Ikes we also have a weekly IDPA league. Starting in April it will run every Thursday night starting at 5pm sharp and running until October. we have two leagues a beginner/intermediate and an advanced 3 gun (new for 2011).

Directions to our club: From HWY 20 west of Dubuque & East of Peosta, take Thunder Hills rd. North to the 4 way stop, proceed north aprox. 300 yds. our club is on the left (west). Gates will be open at 9am on match days.
